A Deep Dive into the Ten Archetypes of Purpose

Discovering Your Purpose

Welcome to another important step on The Path to Purpose. I'm Peggy with Purpose, and today we're delving into a topic that's at the heart of everything I do:

I'm always talking about the Path to Purpose; but what is your purpose and how do you find out what it is? I realized that I have spent too much time talking about living on purpose without ever explaining to you how important knowing your unique purpose is.

There are ten different Archetypes of purpose, and I am going to give a brief overview of each of them on the blog this week as well as the podcast. I am also going to offer you an important exercise which will enable you to find your purpose.

Understanding these ten archetypes can be a game-changer on your journey to living a connected and fulfilling life. It’s a huge part of who you are and what you want from life.

Looking Back

There was once a time when our ancestors relied on each other for their very survival. Each member of the tribe had a unique and indispensable role, creating a sense of belonging, purpose, and unity.

Today, this concept is just as relevant in our families, communities, and workplaces. Understanding our individual purposes strengthens the bonds that hold our modern "tribes" together.

I’ve spent much of my life wondering why I do the things I do, What comes naturally to me, and what have I learned. (Nature vs Nurture) When I discovered I was a Vitality Purpose, it was a huge because it helped me understand myself.

It explained why I get frustrated if things aren’t moving forward the way I planned, and why I want everyone to do well in their own lives.

Looking Forward

In this post, we’ll explore all ten archetypes as I offer a bit of insight into each.  At the end, I'll offer you the opportunity to do the Purpose Exercise with me. But first, let’s discuss how these archetypes relate to everyday life.

In the heart of every tribe, each member holds a unique role, contributing to the tribe's survival and prosperity. Similarly, in our modern lives, each of us has a unique purpose. Understanding these roles will allow us to create a harmonious balance, just like the tribes of long ago.

The Ten Archetypes of Purpose

Connection Purpose:

Aim: to expand togetherness.

They create connected relationships and see through facades. When connected to their heart, they foster trust and unity. However, when disconnected, they can become aloof, defiant, and resentful, often cutting off contact with others.

Growth Purpose:

Aim: to expand the culture.

They are imaginative and break free from conventional thinking. Growth Purposes are visionaries who push boundaries and innovate. When disconnected, they can become condescending and isolated, struggling with loneliness and depression.

Joy Purpose:

Aim: to expand happiness.

They bring joy and a sense of well-being. Joy Purposes light up any environment they are in, spreading positivity and energy. Disconnection can lead them to detach and withdraw, draining their surroundings of joy.

Peace Purpose:

Aim: to expand truth.

They seek to create peaceful environments and harmony. Peace Purposes are natural mediators, striving to resolve conflicts. When disconnected, they become angry and disillusioned, struggling with inner turmoil.

Freedom Purpose:

Aim: to expand possibilities.

They manage groups and prevent chaos. Freedom Purposes thrive on quality and precision. Disconnection leads to frustration, control issues, and obsessive behavior, causing chaos rather than preventing it.

Vitality Purpose:

Aim:  to expand energy.

They motivate and energize the tribe. Vitality Purposes are like the energizer bunnies of their communities, always pushing forward. When disconnected, they become stagnant and aggressive, trying to force progress.

Love Purpose:

Aim: to expand unconditional love.

They are healers and bring serenity. Love Purposes provide emotional support and healing. When disconnected, they become indifferent and detached, feeling unappreciated and martyr-like.

Inspire Purpose:

Aim: to expand vision.

They are creative and innovative. Inspire Purposes are the artists and thinkers who bring fresh perspectives. When disconnected, they feel stuck and passive-aggressive, struggling with depression.

Courage Purpose:

Aim: to expand strength.

They thrive in high-adrenaline situations. Courage Purposes are the warriors and adventurers who push the limits. When disconnected, they become fearful and anxious, doubting their capabilities.

Integrity Purpose:

Aim: to expand action.

They are honorable and trustworthy. Integrity Purposes stand for justice and order. When disconnected, they become divided and resistant, struggling with aggression and a rigid mindset.

How to Discover Your Purpose

Now that we’ve explored each archetype, let’s discuss how you can discover your purpose archetype as well as your top core values and apply this knowledge to your life. Understanding your purpose helps you align your goals with your true self, leading to a more fulfilling life.

I have an amazing tool called the Purpose Exercise, designed to help you discover your purpose and values through a series of simple questions. This exercise works best when done orally, as it allows for quick, instinctive answers. I'm happy to offer a complimentary session to guide you through this process. To schedule your session, please reach out to me via my contact page.

Understanding Your Purpose

Think about how understanding these purpose archetypes could play out in everyday life. In our families, communities, and workplaces, each of us has a role to play and we all behave differently, depending on our purpose.  When we honor our individual roles and those of others, we create an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. Just like the old days, life can be filled with respect and positive energy when we understand and appreciate our unique contributions.

Understanding your purpose helps you understand why you behave, react, and feel the way you do. It also helps you communicate and interact with others with compassion and empathy. When you understand another person's purpose, you can better navigate your relationships with them, recognizing their strengths and challenges.

The Benefits of Understanding Your Purpose

When I figured out that I am a Vitality Purpose, it made a big difference for me. Learning that stagnation disconnected me from my heart, from my purpose, changed the way I saw conflict. Knowing that stagnation put me into the red zone made it easier for me know that I’d be stressed.  It allowed me to prepare myself emotionally.

I could identify when I was forcing things, pushing too hard, and getting frustrated. This awareness allowed me to take a step back, take a few deep breaths, and respond from the green zone with a plan, rather than reacting from the red zone with frustration. Amazing! Even life changing.

Understanding your purpose is a powerful tool. It helps you navigate life with more clarity and intention. It also allows you to interact with others with more compassion and empathy, recognizing their unique contributions and challenges.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope this exploration of the Archetypes of Purpose has been enlightening for you. Remember, understanding your purpose is a key part of living a connected and fulfilling life. If you know someone who could benefit from this clarity, please share this blog post with them.
